José James, uma estrela em ascensão, criou um novo estilo na música contemporânea ao combinar blues urbano, hip hop, soul, drum’n’bass para produzir um som fresco e inovador, mas totalmente enraizado nas tradições do jazz.
O seu trabalho é testemunha da sua paixão pela diversidade, como quando mistura os blues com o piano do lendário Junior Mance, abordando contemporaneamente Nola de Bill Lee, ou quando faz uma abordagem jazz contemporânea do hip hop a soul groove dos anos 70.
As suas composições originais vão desde uma canção linear até ao jazz contemporâneo, ao soul jazz e drum’n’bass, sendo que ainda deixam espaço para baladas poéticas e hinos rock românticos.
